As part of the national Oxford House network, Wapello operates under three guiding principles:
Democratically run – the residents themselves make decisions for the house.
Financially self-supporting – members share responsibility for household expenses.
Drug- and alcohol-free – relapse results in immediate expulsion to protect the community.
Since the first Oxford House opened in 1975, the peer-supported model has expanded to more than 2,000 homes worldwide, offering a proven and cost-effective pathway to recovery. Wapello Men’s Oxford House proudly carries on this tradition here in Ottumwa.
Eligibility
You may apply to live at Wapello Men’s Oxford House if you have:
Completed an inpatient treatment program, or
Completed detox with extensive outpatient treatment, or
Established a period of sobriety and demonstrate the desire to stay clean.
How it works:
Applicants are interviewed by current residents.
If 80% of the house members approve and a room is available, the applicant is accepted.

Amenities include:
2-story house with 6 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms.
Fully furnished, with dishwasher, washer, dryer, internet, cable, and phone.
Conveniently located on the bus line and near local businesses.
Cost: $550/month (includes rent, utilities, phone, cable, and Wi-Fi) + one-time nonrefundable $100 move-in fee. Assistance is available for first month’s rent.
